The Canadian province of Alberta has become a major centre for power development and financing activity. Alberta faces the toughest challenges of any province in decarbonising its power fleet, and sponsors need to get creative to finance new capacity in the AESO energy-only spot market.
The Claresholm solar project was a real first for the Canadian market. It's the country's largest solar plant and combined contracted and merchant revenues to produce a benchmark for greenfield renewables in the province. It also combined bank and institutional tranches and used a variety of structural enhancements to get lenders comfortable with its offtake profile. The deal was a deserving winner of Proximo's North America Solar award.
