Enel’s recent $1.4 billion sale of its Chilean transmission assets is symptomatic of the country’s lopsided National Electric System (NES). With vertical integration prohibited – and with Enel focussing on generation – the company’s transmission assets lost their lustre. Repeated at a national level, such priorities create significant issues for the entire industry – and, from there, the economy.
